Wild Goose Chase Just Part of Customer Service

CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO - George Vallis, maintenance manager with the Comfort Inn Cambridge, recently received a Hospitality Hero Award for the persistence and goodwill that he demonstrated in locating and returning a lost item to a hotel guest. It all began when a delegate taking part in a Royal Canadian Legion Convention had mentioned that he had left his eyeglasses in a taxi. George contacted the taxi company, who informed him that the glasses had been returned to the arena. When a drive out to the arena proved fruitless, George once again called the taxi company and was told that the driver had left the item at the conference registration desk. As the desk was no longer manned, George made more telephone calls to track down who might have been in charge of staffing at the time, including a call to his own Legion Branch president. George’s investigative work culminated in yet another trip to a different Legion Branch, where the glasses were finally located.

When Cambridge Tourism staff surprised George with the award, he modestly insisted that his efforts were not extraordinary. "I know what it’s like to go without your glasses," he chuckled. The semi-retired maintenance man was applauded by his co-workers, who had gathered around to take part in the award presentation. George’s manager, Cathy Rogozynski, said that "fter several phone calls and trips around town, all on his own time and of his own doing, George returned the glasses to a very happy guest! We feel that he is truly a Hospitality Hero."

In recognition of his commitment to customer service, Cambridge Tourism presented Mr. Vallis with a Hospitality Hero plaque, gold lapel pin and a gift basket filled with contributions from Tourism Partner businesses.
