SAFARI RESCUES TOY ANIMALS TOO!

(Cambridge, Ontario) On Thursday, October 9th, 2003, Maya Chakravarti, Game Warden – Pets’ Corner, at African Lion Safari, received the September Hospitality Hero Award presented by Cambridge Tourism.

Maya Chakaravarti is a real hero in the eyes of a two-year old girl named Abby. During a day at the African Lion Safari, Abby and her family took a ride on the ‘African Queen’ Boat cruise. Unfortunately, on this ride, Abby accidentally lost her best friend and most prized possession, a pink and white stuffed rabbit puppet with a silk tie. Somehow, her toy friend went overboard and sunk to the bottom of Safari Lake. Maya was nearby feeding the monkeys when she was called to help retrieve the stuffed rabbit from the bottom of the 8-foot lake. Maya ventured out on a rowboat to see if the rabbit could be seen. When it could not be retrieved, the little girl was devastated and the family left their phone number with African Lion Safari in case it was ever found.

The next morning, Maya set out again on the rowboat determined to see if the rabbit could possibly be seen in the morning sunshine. Miraculously, she spied it and rescued the tiny rabbit from the bottom of the lake. When the family was contacted they were ecstatic having thought that it was lost forever. Abby’s family wanted to nominate Maya to thank her for her efforts, saying “Thank-you to Maya! She really went beyond the call of duty which is the most amazing thing and we’ll never forget that!”

When Cambridge Tourism presented Maya with her award she said “Wow! Thanks! I knew that this stuffed rabbit was very special to the child, so I knew I wanted to do all that I could to help.
