Putting the “Care” in Hair Care

Pauline Silva was recently presented with Cambridge Tourism’s monthly Hospitality Hero Award for the exceptional customer service and patience that she exhibited to one of her young clients at First Choice Haircutters. Though normally traumatized by getting his hair cut, the young lad responded with a smile when Pauline did the job. His mother, who nominated Pauline, explained that this is no small feat. "My son is receiving therapy for mild autism and has always had a great fear of getting a trim”, she said. “His usual reaction is to squirm, cry and scream (quite loudly) in the chair”. But Pauline was completely at ease about working with her jittery client and her unhurried and good-humoured approach soon paid off. “Pauline took it really slow and even let my son play with the ‘buzzer’ before using it on his hair” she explained. “When Pauline was finished, he was thrilled with himself and excited about his haircut!"

Pauline, who has been with First Choice for nearly 15 years, enjoys her work and has an obvious love of people. Like so many customer service stars, she says that she lives by the simple motto to “treat people with respect”, an attitude that has made her popular with all of her customers at the South Cambridge Centre location. The nominator felt that Pauline’s sensitivity and great instincts with dealing with children should not go unrecognized. “We believe that she is a great choice for the Hospitality Hero Award”, the grateful mom said. “We’ll never go to anyone else.”

In recognition of Pauline’s commitment to customer service, Cambridge Tourism presented her with a Hospitality Hero plaque, gold lapel pin and a gift basket filled with contributions from Tourism Partner businesses.
