VIPs Set to Lift Off!

(Cambridge, Ontario) - Cambridge Tourism is preparing to launch a brand new program to support their Visitor Services department. Volunteer Information Providers (VIPs) will be a community group created to provide a variety of services for visitors to Cambridge.

“The concept of the VIPs has bounced around for several years”, notes Lisa Haddow, Visitor Services Coordinator and the originator of this idea. “We just have not had the opportunity to get the concept off the ground until now.”

Cambridge Tourism was successful in receiving funding under a Job Creation Partnerships contribution agreement from the Government of Canada to support the addition of one full-time employee to focus on the project. The total amount of funding is $13,751, which will cover the participant’s wages and overhead costs and allow Cambridge Tourism to develop and implement the VIP program.

“We are pleased to introduce Mr. Mort Cooper, our Volunteer Program Strategist who will head this project”, announced Ms. Haddow. “Mort has numerous years of experience working with volunteer groups and Boards of Directors through his sporting background. We felt he was best suited to nurture this project for us.”

Mort Cooper is best known for his career in the sport of curling, managing curling clubs in Guelph and Brantford, and acting as the Executive Director for the Ontario Curling Federation (now called Curl Ontario) in Toronto. Armed with 24 years of experience, Mort has worked with numerous groups and committees, most notably as a volunteer with the Uniroyal Goodrich World Junior Curling Championships and the Tournament Capital of Ontario Committee in Brantford.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with the fine folks of Cambridge Tourism”, says Cooper. “Exploring the depths of volunteerism and creating a program to suit the needs of the Visitors Services department will be the central focus of this community group in order to promote Cambridge in a colourful and entertaining way.”

Cambridge VIPs will be supporting visitors to our community in three ways.

  • Tourism Counsellor Assistant – welcoming visitors to the Gateway Visitor Centre by providing front line visitor support and basic administrative assistance
  • Community Ambassador – welcoming visitors at the site of festivals, conventions or sporting tournaments
  • Step-On Tour Guide – conducting motor coach guided tours of our historic community.

Those who wish to learn more about the Cambridge VIPs or are interested in volunteering with Cambridge Tourism should contact Mort Cooper to find out how to get involved.

This project was funded by the Government of Canada’s Job Creation Partnerships program.
